Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) Unit

The COPPS Unit has a variety of responsibilities. One of our primary responsibilities is directed street crime enforcement, assisting SACMCTF (Southern Alameda County Major Crimes Task Force) with gang and narcotic enforcement, and assisting the Investigations Unit. The COPPS unit also handles on-going community problems, public nuisances and blight through CHAT (Community Health Action Team). Members of CHAT are comprised of police, various city departments, and other public service agency personnel who work together to find long term solutions to issues affecting the quality of life in your communities.

In addition to proactive enforcement, the COPPS Unit coordinates Crime Prevention programs designed to reduce crime as well increase the quality of life. One of our most notable programs is the Neighborhood Watch Program. This program allows the police department to partner with neighborhoods to work together to reduce crime. The Union City Police Department also participates in Crime Free, which is a program designed for multi housing complexes in the city, to collaborate with the police department to lower crime in multi-housing units in the city.

The COPPS unit also participates in education efforts at schools such as 9-1-1 for Kids and Stranger Danger presentations and the COPPS Unit takes part in community presentations to community groups on crime prevention and related topics. The COPPS Unit also does community outreach and can be seen at various community events throughout the year at events such as the St. Anne’s Festival and Our Lady of the Rosary Festival. COPPS also participates in National Night Out. National Night Out is an opportunity for the city and community to come together and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, heighten crime prevention and participate in local anti-crime efforts.
