Megan's Law

In the late 1990s the Federal Government implemented a program to inform the public about sex offenders living in their communities. Megan's Law was named after a seven-year-old New Jersey girl, Megan Kanka, who was murdered by a sexual offender who lived on her street. Although the sexual offender had registered with the law enforcement agency where he lived, no one in the neighborhood knew of this "predator's" presence and the threat he was to the children in the neighborhood.

As a result of new legislation, the California Department of Justice has provided an internet web site which lists registered sex offenders residing in California. This site will allow you to access the database by name, zip code, or city/county listings throughout the state.

Although the law permits the dissemination of certain information about sexual offenders, it also includes safeguards against retaliation and harassment by the public.
