Human Relations Commission
What We Do
Our Focus
The HRC maintains subcommittees that focus on specific issues and projects. Over time, the committees and their focus change to meet the requirements of the community. Presently, the HRC has subcommittees concentrating on Youth Violence Prevention and Intervention, Sister Cities Activities, National Night Out, and Union City's Volunteer of the Year Recognition Program.
Accomplishments and Activities
- Under the direction of the City Council, created the Union City Youth Committee in 1996
- Developed the City's Anti-Discrimination Policy in 1997
- Reviewed the City's Affirmative Action Plan
- Reviewed the recommended funding levels for the Community Block Grant Program
- Developed a City motto and sign program
- Reviewed issues related to the Police Review Board
On-Going Activities
- Organizes youth gang violence community forums and develops collaborations
- Developed resource information for at-risk youth and families
- Conducts hearings and prepares reports and recommendations to the City Council
- Review and recommends funding for community-based organizations, including programs for youth, seniors, athletics, community gardens, cultural events and other projects fundineded by the City of Union City
- Identifies training needs of the Commission as it relates to conflict resolution and cultural sensitivity
- Receives reports of hate crimes and works with City agencies to effect solutions and/or mediate the causes
